South Creek Retreat, famously known as 'The Old Chequers', is a historic property with a fascinating past. Originally operating as the Chequers Inn, it served as a central gathering place for the village of South Creake for over 300 years, with close ties to the neighboring Pinchens Brewery.
In 1784, a sale of copyhold land in South Creake was held at the house of Robert Oliver, known by the sign of the Chequer. The inn remained a hub of village throughout the 19th century, before closing in 1963. Following extensive renovations, the building was transformed into a luxury holiday home, combining modern comfort with its historic character.
Today, we offer two distinct experiences: leisure stays under our heritage name, The Old Chequers, and bespoke corporate packages under South Creek Retreat.
LUXURY ROOMS
South Creek Retreat offers 6 en-suite bedrooms, with two of these configurable as either super king beds or twin beds, allowing extra flexibility.
While the maximum capacity of the house is 14 guests (with bed sharing), we understand that corporate groups typically prefer not to share beds.
In a non–bed-sharing configuration, the house can comfortably accommodate up to 11 guests:

Accessibility:
The ground floor bedroom is designed as wheelchair-friendly, with an ensuite wet-room shower plus removable shower chair.
