The Heritage
Three Hundred Years Of People Meeting Here
South Creek Retreat, famously known as 'The Old Chequers', is a historic property with a fascinating past. Originally operating as the Chequers Inn, it served as a central gathering place for the village of South Creake for over 300 years, with close ties to the neighbouring Pinchens Brewery.
In 1784, a sale of copyhold land in South Creake was held at the house of Robert Oliver, known by the sign of the Chequer. The inn remained a hub of village throughout the 19th century, before closing in 1963. Following extensive renovations, the building was transformed into a luxury holiday home, combining modern comfort with its historic character.
Today, we offer two distinct experiences: leisure stays under our heritage name, The Old Chequers, and bespoke corporate packages under South Creek Retreat.

What amenities are included in the rooms?
All six bedrooms feature en-suite bathrooms with premium bedding including super king-size beds (two bedrooms can be configured as twin beds), high thread count cotton linens, imported down and feather pillows, and temperature-regulating duvets. Each en-suite is stocked with shower gel, hand soap, toilet paper, and hair dryers. Rooms include wardrobes, Bluetooth speakers, and branded robes. The master suite features a freestanding bath, walk-in shower, double basin, and underfloor heating, plus a dressing room with bunk beds and an ante-room with a sofa bed.
How far is South Creek Retreat from major cities?
We are located just 2 hours from London and 90 minutes from Cambridge, making us a convenient choice for corporate guests traveling from major cities.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations made 30 days or more before arrival date will receive a full refund. Cancellations within 14 days before arrival date will receive a 50% refund. 0% refundable if canceled after. Please refer to our Terms & Conditions for more details.
Can I bring my pet with me to the retreat?
Yes, South Creek Retreat is pet-friendly, however we charge an additional fee per pet. Please inform us in advance to make the necessary arrangements for your furry friend.
